Reflecting on a Life Well Lived

This week we decided to start a blog.  Its actually something we’ve been thinking about for a while, ever since we found out it was the cool thing to do.  I don’t think its really caught on in Kenya so maybe that makes us cutting edge.  We want to blog so that we can write about thoughts we’re having, things the Lord is teaching us, and the occasional adventure.  The reason we picked this week to start blogging is because we have something to say.

A couple of days ago we found out that David Yallo was killed in a car accident in Tanzania.  David was one of our facilitators, our friend, and most importantly a man that loved Jesus.  As the shock is beginning to fade and grief is setting in, I’ve started to reflect on David and his life.  He was a passionate man, with a single passion, to make Christ known.  He had a boldness with the Gospel that’s rare for anyone, especially for a single guy in his 20’s.

Stu and I recently had a conversation where we talked about how David needed to calm down a bit and make some choices.  You see, one week he wanted to share Christ with businessmen in the city and the next week he would be in the middle of nowhere Tanzania starting churches in a village and the week after that he would be working with us so he could earn money to go somewhere else.  All the while he was working towards going to the States for seminary.  He was all over the place and our finite minds thought he could be more effective if he just chose one path and stuck with it.

Looking back, I’m so glad David was doing what the Lord called him to and not what we thought he should be doing.  He spoke truth into so many lives and showed so many the meaning of joy.  David is now in heaven, where he will worship his Savior forever.  He certainly made the most of every opportunity the Lord put before him and Stu and I have spent the past few days reflecting on the things the Lord would have us learn from his life.

David taught us what it means to live with urgency, to put the kingdom of God above all other pursuits.  He showed us what it means to love people, and that real love always speaks truth.  And like so many of our other Kenyan brothers and sisters, he taught us how to do it all with joy.  As time passes there is surely more we will learn about the Lord through David’s life and death.  But for now we just thank the Lord that David is able to fully experience the Savior he was so willing to share with others.
